What Is Spirituality?

Spirituality can often be difficult to describe. It is ethereal, complex, and very individual and personal to each of us. Sometimes people confuse religion and spirituality, believing they are the same thing. They are not. Religion is one of many ways to frame and express one’s spirituality.

Every [person] is good in the sight of the Great Spirit
— Sitting Bull

Spirituality is relational and intimate. It is essential to being human and is the foundation for all of our relationships including but not limited to our relationship with ourselves and with all of humanity. It is the Spirit, Spark or Light at the core of our being, expressing Itself through our understanding of the Great Mystery, of Nature and/or of the God we know. These relationships are at the heart of how we make sense of life and how we find meaning and purpose in a world that sometimes seems beyond our understanding.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
— Martin Luther King, Jr.

What Is A Spiritual Journey?

There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.
— Rabbi Leonard Cohen

Just as we are all spiritual beings, we are also seekers searching for moral, ethical and spiritual significance in our life. What makes our search a spiritual journey is the intentionality we bring to the process. The goal as we travel is not to reach a particular destination. Instead it is to be fully engaged with everything we experience along the way.

Things may happen around you and things may happen to you, but the only things that really count are the things that happen in you.
— Eric Butterworth, Spiritual Economics

Being a spiritual traveler does not exclude us from the uncomfortable twists and turns of life. Instead the journey offers us opportunities to be present in every moment, authentically engaged with our joy and our sorrow, our peace and our suffering, our fear and our courage; the full experience of our humanity.  Our journey is our practice of keeping our heart lovingly open, our spirit fully connected and our mind focused on the sacredness of living.

When we can say, “I am all of the above, my shadow as well as my light,” we become more at ease in our own skins, more at home on the face of a planet rich with diversity, more accepting of others who are no more or less broken-whole than we are, and better able to lives as life-givers to the end of our days.
— Parker Palmer "One the Brink of everything: Grace, Gravity & Getting Old"

Spiritual Companionship (Spiritual Direction)

Simply, spiritual companionship is the experience of being accompanied and supported by another as you travel your path to authentic living.

No thing outside of you can ever give you what you
believe you are missing.
— Dr. Terry Cole-Whittaker

Our world has become so busy that most of us have little time to listen to the needs of the heart of our being. This is especially true when feeling afraid, when experiencing pain, or when we are questioning life and how it can make sense or have purpose and meaning.

I wish I could show you when you are lonely or in darkness the astonishing light of your own being.
— Hafez, 12th Century Poet

Here are some of the core beliefs I have come to hold as truth as I travel on my path. These truths support me in my life and serve as the foundation for the spiritual support I provide others.

  • Our daily gift is this present moment, in which we each have our own best answers.

  • We all have the capacity to overcome the belief that we are not good enough.

  • The Holy whispers to us to help support and guide each of us so we can grow to our fullest potential.

  • God is known by many names, supporting and loving each of us on our individual paths, no matter outward appearances.

  • There is only Love. Fear is a facet of our ego, meant to protect us – instead fear limits each of us by closing our hearts.

  • Life is in perfect order even if it does not feel good.

  • Everything changes.

  • Telling our life story gives voice to our soul’s healing even when we still do not know the answers.

I can be changed by what happens to me, but I refuse to be reduced by It.
— Maya Angelou
